I have Corsair XMS Pro PC3200 512MB in my PC atm.

Does anyone know if I can use Corsair PC4200 memory to bring it up to 1GB, does the PC4200 memory auto negotiate down to PC3200?

If not can anyone explain to me why. I musy admit I don'e know a lot about memory technologies.

yeap if you put memory of 2 different speeds in your comp the memory that runs faster will always clock itself down to run slower..

just for the fact.. its that way lol.. memory can't run at different speeds. best is always to use the same type, speed and brand of memory..

also.. make sure your mobo can take pc 4200.. only newer ones take that.. nor this one nor my old mobo can take over pc 3200 and if the mobo can't take pc 4200 it won't even downgrade it it just won't work..

Lots of PC4200 will only run at really slack memory timings, so if ur only planning on running at DDR400/PC3200 speeds, just get that RAM.

one side note though... if your mobo does not support the used chip model on the PC4200 memory bank.... then it won't work at all, it can downclock everything you want... but it does have to understand HOW to communicate with it

Its rather hard to find out usualy though... can't you just buy PC3200 ? Its not like it matters on speed and probably will on money
(try to look trough tested memory... though thats probably not gonna help... so take a good look at the bios update change log to see if they added support for new memory types or something simular)

not to sure, but it can also be that corsair simply uses a bit overclocked PC3200 chips for their PC4200, then it should work fine.

Check out www.corsairmicro.com to check for motherboard compatability. Also check to see whether the automatic timing settings are appropriate to your motherboard, otherwise you will get the "blue screen of death" associated with windows memory failures (and a lot other besides).

You will not be able to run the two memory banks in true DDR (I'm assuming you were referring to a single memory stick with 512 on and not two paired sticks here) but assuming you comp supports it you could run these in seperate memory banks.

Far better if cash allowed it to buy the Corsair TwinX modules which are paired modules guarenteed to work with DDR memory isn't that expensive these days, and the increased performance from using DDR is worth it, especially as you would be underclocking a more expensive component to get a lesser effect

Visit the corsair site anyway though, and browse through the memory tutorials that they have there, it will be well worth your time in informing you of current memory technologies.

Well, I got DDR433 Corsair 256 in this box, trying to get cash for another bank. PC3200. Fast enough for me
