x2 Broadband ISPs on one phone line

Postby Belkin » Fri Aug 20, 2004 10:35 am

Subject pretty much says it all.

Does anyone know (100% not just opinion) whether you can get x2 broadband ISPs onto one phoneline.

Where I live is not my house so it's not up to me whether another phone line is installed or not.

Does anyone know any helpful links to websites that can convince my dad.
Even though I have told him till im blue in the face, he still has concerns that having two people on a 1 meg link will slow down the service. I told him that the company I used to work with had 130 peeps on a 2meg line but he says he wants hard proof and it's up to me to get it.

He alos said he wants no wires running from his router to my room so if we are to share the link it must be done with wireless. This is fine with me, but again he said it was up to me to go back to him with a solution.

He's such a technophobe dick somethimes!. :(

He's retiring in September and after he has painted the house he's bound to get bored, if I can have a solution by then it will make it harder for him to say no. :x

God i wish I had enough money to move out. :(

Anyway seems as all the forums are so quiet atm, im expecting a lot of feedback on this, if you can be bothered that is.

lol on a school i worked there were about 80 comps on internet on a single isdn line lol..

anyway we got 3 comps on internet. speed has been upgraded to 2.2 megs over the last few years but i can play neocron without a problem even if my bro is online playing.. ping will go up a bit but in neocron it doesn't matter.. don't try and run like UT2004 when others are pulling off the net and hard :p

but for general use its great.. my bro is online pretty much all day.. at night my dad is online chatting surfing and playing some silly cardgames online :p and i'm playing NC all night.. nobody has lag or anything.. and even when our con was "just" 1 megs we could have 2 comps online with ease.. normal surfing and stuff doesn't need that much.. unless your both wanna play UT2004 online or any real heavy game then your ok i gues.

I know for 100% that this is technicaly possible, however I also know for 100% that in the netherlands where I live this will never ever be done for any private.

If he's such a n00b I doubt you'll ever find a way to convince him :p
Anyway, I've never googled for info like this as I already know the answer, thus I cannot help you find "hard proof"(pfff:p) on the net.
I suggest you make a simple drawing for him to show what program requires what bandwith, and what a router does with the availeble bandwith... If he's not able to undersand that drawing, he will probably never understand any "hard proof" someone will get you from the net.
(books might be better perhaps, go see your library :x)

I am downloading 24/7 at high speeds, still able to play ut2003 perfectly fine online, and neocron to, biggest problem is not the download but the upload. (thought not anymore here, since latest upgrade)

Anyway I realise Belkin knows all about this stuff and is just looking for a way to convince his dad... to which I continue to tell him to get it from books, people are convinced more quickly with those(for good reasons to).

I dont think its possible to have 2 xDSL connections on one phoneline. However, you can always double the bandwith and you'll both be happy. Of course having 2 PCs on same connection will lead into the PCs fighting for bandwith against each other, but ONLY if both computers are trying to upload/download data as fast as possible. Having a router in between will divide all available bandwith evenly to the needing PCs.

yeah I know, atm at weekends I play round a friends house and we have x3 peeps on a 1meg line using a Belkin router (how I got my name btw, too lazy to think of a better one).

As you all know for a lover of NC playing once a week is never enough, especially with having to get chars ready for NC2. God I'm starting to feel like the elusive Booglebox!, and that's BAD!
