If i may ask brammers :)

(OT) But didnt want to make another thread.

How much does your Box cost you?

You Co-Locate with a bunch of friends right? Ive just bought a Linux distro box, its nice.. Took me a few days to get my head around the linux SSH commands. But all is well.

So how much do you pay for Co-Location ^^ , please?

At a guess 500-700 quid - been a while since it was built. It's a custom 1U box, but some parts did cost a bit more. (I think the linux compatible RAID controller was quite expensive)

The hosting, think it's was about 600quid a year but the server got moved about 4 months ago when our host BlackCat networks was sold to Rapidswitch. I'm sure it's cheaper now. I don't know the exact numbers, as I don't pay the bill, I just pass on the cash to my friend who handles the bill.

/mod note: Topic split - since talking about Redmine is a highly technical developer topic that most people will ignore, and THN colo information is something completely different that other people may read - Next time Pantho start a seperate thread! :p

I could build a nice one to co-locate...

For about £250 i could make a quad core,4gb ram,250gb sata drive

only problem is its an intel not a xeon, but xeon's are soooo expensive heh...

Think im just going to rent a dedicated box for the time being... Then if we make anything of it buy summer ill build a nice one :)

Image

Dexl PowerEdge 860 Case
Intel 2.33ghz Core2Duo (2mbl2cache per core)
3gb Corsair XMS2 ram (800mhz)
80gb sata2 hdd

Intel because socket 771 mobo's are to expensive, and the cpu's... forget about it for the time being.

the 775 sockets are not to shabby, decent motherboards for them atm, but low ram sockets. Managed to get a 4 socked 8gbmax memory one tho, so upgrade reliable. Altho i do not own a 64bit server 2003 os. So 3-4gb rams a limit for along time.

80gb hdd, Is all we need, its a nice realible fast one as well... And we are running out of monies

XMS2 ram is so sexy, and only a few pound more.

and Rapidswitch hosting it seems (Oh so so sexy)

Thanx for that link brammers, everyon on the net points to them also :)

-edit

all for under £300, hopefully

It's work getting some more capacity and also mirroring the disks at least in a RAID1 config, so you don't get screwed with a HDD failure.

Take a gander, its still being edited....

Cant add articles for some reason at the moment, and needs a new banner.. But its only been up 30minutes, gives it a chance :p

Its a CS:S community with 5 active servers

you'd be shocked by how little a pair of Xeons are needed in a server... couple of the boxes we have hosted are minimal spec and are used for web hosting, database serving, mail, and all that other good stuff, and barely ever have a load average greater than 0.5...
