Ventrillo 3.0.0 Release

Postby Pantho » Mon Nov 12, 2007 11:09 am

Ventrilo v3.0.0 is being released sometime on Wednesday, November 14,
2007.

This new version requires a new client be downloaded and installed on
every user's PC or MAC. The client is available at
http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php

Here are some of the added features in Ventrilo v3.0.0:

1) Multiple CODECS: You can now have a different CODEC for each
channel. You can have your server set to GSM if you wish, and then set a
channel up just for another CODEC (like SPEEX). We do not restrict the CODEC
you choose to use nor to we charge more for the use of the higher end
CODECS like many others do.

2) Overlay Support: An Overlay is a mechanism by which the program can
present data to the user on the display screen that normally would not
be visible during such situations such as when the user is playing a
game in full screen mode.

3) Advanced User Access Rights: You now have more "power" over your
server.

4) Guest MOTD: You can force a MOTD on all guests that enter your
server. The Guest MOTD is only sent to those users who do not have an
account created on this server. It is always displayed at login as well,
unlike the regular MOTD which is only displayed if it changes or if the
Server Properties has dictated to always be displayed.

5) Complaints: Users can now lodge a complaint about a user on a
server. Complaints will only be visible by those users who have been given
access rights to receive complaints. This option is available only if you
have been given access rights to send complaint messages.

6) Integration: This feature enables or disables integration with one
of the selected media player programs listed in the menu (iTunes, WinAmp
and Windows Media Player). When enabled the Ventrilo client will
periodically poll the specified application for details about what it is
currently playing: song, artist, track, etc. This information will be sent
out to all of the other users on the server to see and it will be
displayed in quotes after the transmitting users name and after their
comment if there is one.

7) Ventrilo Rank List: If an account is assigned a rank then all other
users will see the abbreviated form of the rank in front of the users
account name in the main Ventrilo window. Each rank is assigned a Level
value between 0 and 100. If the associated rank level is greater then
or equal to a channels "Transmit Rank Level" and the channels "Voice
Mode" is Queued or Muted then when the user joins that channel they will
be automatically un-muted. Whereas, anyone with a Rank Level below the
channels Transmit Rank Level will be automatically muted. A Channel or
Server Admin can still manually unmute a muted user so that they can
transmit.

8) Voice Targets: Voice Targets are virtual channels that only certain
accounts are allowed to receive-from and/or transmit-to. You must have
an account on the server in order to be part of a target group. If you
receive a voice stream from another user that is part of a voice target
group that you are a member of and they are transmitting to just the
voice target group, rather then to a channel like normal, then the icon
of the person transmitting will be displayed as a Green "G" for group
target stream.

9) Commanding Targets: Commanding Targets are basically virtual
channels for sending text based commanding messages that can be spoken using
Text-To-Speech and/or displayed using the Video Overlay features of the
program. The primary use is for one or more people to send text
oriented commanding messages to a larger group of people of a specific target
group. These text messages can be entered manually into the Commanding
Targets window or bound to a series of Bindable keys / buttons just
like the TTS and Wave File binds.

I have no idea about THN server, but my host for the SkullCult vent is forcing the upgrade 1 week after the release.

Meaning ALL users must upgrade. i expect, but not sure, that all server hosting companies will do this

Thanks for the heads-up. I've not heard from my host about an upgrade, but they have only just recently finished moving the vent servers to a new IP.

Generally Flagship (The people who make ventrilo) usually force providers to stay upto date, so I wouldn't be surprised. I'll keep users upto date on the server's MOTD and here as well.

Ok just asked my providers.

Soon as Ventrilo v3.0 is released, you will have an option available in your Ventrilo Control Panel to instantly upgrade - this is totally automatic and will take a matter of a seconds to migrate over to the latest version.

As for when the THN moves to 3.0, I'll most likely migrate a few weeks afterward.

yea mine says that
Ventrilo v3.0.0 is being released sometime on Wednesday, November 14,
2007.

The Ventrilo v3.0.0 client is *NOT* compatible with v2.3 servers, so
once you upgrade your client you will only be able to connect to Ventrilo
v3 servers. When a v2.3 client tries to connect to a v3.0 server it
will pop a message saying the server is running v3.0.0. However, if you
install the v3.0.0 client and then try connecting to a v2.3 server it
will just sit there saying "Contacting server" and will never come back.
You can click disconnect to stop this process.

As of now, we have updated the Control Panel to be ready for v3.0.0.
The new files will be put into place sometime after the expected release
time on Wednesday.

As for upgrading servers, we are providing a way for everyone to
perform their own upgrades. On Wednesday, we will open the "Upgrade" option
in the Control Panel. Simply click the link and the system will upgrade
your server. This process CANNOT be reversed (this means the upgrade
is PERMANENT). Make sure you communicate with your users when you plan
on upgrading your server so they will know they need the new upgraded
program to connect to your server after the upgrade.

Those servers that have not been upgraded by the evening of Friday,
November 16, 2007 (US Eastern Time) will be upgraded sometime between
Friday evening and Monday morning. If your server falls into this category,
when you receive the "server is running 3.0.0" error in your Ventrilo
v2.3 client, you need to then visit the Ventrilo Download Link
(mentioned above) to download and install the Ventrilo v3.0.0 client.

Seems i dont have a choice :), plus im always up for more vent features :D

-edit

hmm if it doesnt work with my Proxy programs... ill ill ill.. well ill be using sxr vent lol

Just had another message from my hosts.

When Ventrilo is released, and the files have been added to our suppliers servers - we will then enabled the 'Upgrade' option in your Ventrilo Control Panel where you can instantly upgrade your server from v2.3 to v3.0. If you still haven't upgraded your server by Friday - Saturday, all servers will be upgraded then by our supplier.

So the THN doesn't have any choice either :( I don't like forced upgrades.

could make one..

Whats, its only a vb program with 3 shell commands...

i think :/.. i can get all 3 version of vent working without mix in a folder, so cant see how much more difficult it would be to remake mix with 5 instead of 4 commands

Vent 3 forced itself onto today, with no drama. It's a pain having everyone have (GUEST) after their name, it means if you want rid of that you have to set everyone up as users.

Aside from that, it's just the same as ever. I use Vista, so the overlay doesn't work, but it looks a bit big and clunky to be of real use. The new permissions model is very nice, however.

I can also now have a bind that lets me hold it down, it silences everyone else in all channels, and I can shout orders or prophanities at them. That's amusing, for a while.

By semi-forcing people to have user names, you can also create your own groups, so I could say just to clan members "we're being beaten senseless again, run away!" and no visitor the vent would be able to laugh at us.
