A FoM (the supposed NC killer) trailer just came out and can be found at http://www.faceofmankind.com .. it's not too bad and not the best, but you should check it out for yourself and make your call. I'll probably dip into the game when it comes out just to see how it feels. Oh, and remember this when watching the video:

...Oompa loompa doopity doo...

Just watched the trailer. Looks ok,
But it doesn't grab me and at the moment is a long way from killing NC.

Does anyone know if some developers from NC are actually working on this?

NC > FoMK

To be honest, I can easily see this killing the 'current' NC when it's released. But we've yet to see BDOY. If that doesn't grab me by the short and curlies then you know where Phoenix Ltd will be :D

Have to have a look at the trailer when I'm back on my Broadband connection in Bristol. And I'm also signed up to the FoMK beta as well, not heard anything yet.

FoMK == sexy.

If indeed it's an NC killer then I hope they stole a few things from NC that I like.

1) Constructors and Researchers are more than just dead weight, they can fight, sometimes very very well, and the quality of the items they make are better than those that are available anywhere else.

2) Rares. I have a lot of fun searching for rares, collecting them and trading them. Not to mention building them. (Having my name on a rare is a very cool status symbol) Having a pseudo black market player driven economy around rares is a lot of fun.

3) Vehicles.

4) A good variety of combat types. Many games really slack in this, only a very few of them have a "pet class" (remote combat, such as drones or elementals in AC2), and most often they're done poorly. While droning is rife with bugs, it's still a hell of a lot of fun. While I can't pick of a rifle and wade into battle, I have yet to be killed in an OP war. For variety in many games you're often limited to heavy, light, or ranged weapons with an occasional magic or support class thrown in, but often times the underlaying character is such that he can do any job with the proper training. I really enjoy the way NC limits the fields, and achieves this with a fairly good level of balance (though that balance gets hosed all the time).

5) Player controlled resources, in other words, OPs. Gives the high level people something fun to do :)

Things I hope they've avoided:

1) FREd
2) FREd
3) FREd
4) Did I mention FREd?

Okay, so I've skipped over a *lot* of things that NC has done wrong that I hope FoMK does right. I just hope that FoMK comes out late enough in '04 that we're all bored of BDoY, and can all make a shift over to FoMK and have all our friends there when we arrive :)

Well, it looks like the construction system is going to be completely different than NC. In fact, it sounds a lot more like Eve Online (yes, the mining simulator) where you're basically gathering resources and if you have a blueprint, you can produce "X" item at a production facility.

The economy is also player driven. While theoretically a great way to do things, I have yet to see it work right. The aspect of having four or five different markets though sounds cool. (Though they couldn't even make *one* market work in Eve)

Basically, to build an organization like Phoenix in FoM would require the "members" of Phoenix to gather tons of money to purchase blueprints, resources and facilities for item production. Since there are no "skills" (just ranks based on #/difficulty of the missions you've done) in the game, it sounds like this is going to require the time honored MMO time-sink of "kill deer. skin deer. sell deer skin." except with a mining tool. I can't imagine the mission system paying off enough to make much of a living (let alone build a company) as a newb character.

While FoM still sounds freakin cool, after reading some of the info on various fan sites, I'm starting to a have a few reservations. The economic system is exceptionally cool, and if I hadn't experienced the horrors of a poorly balanced version of that system (Eve) I would be excited. Since it got so hosed in Eve (several times up until I quit) I know how badly it can suck. There's nothing that sucks more than spending 3 hours mining, another half hour trying to figure out where you can make money off the ore you just mined, another 3 hours getting there only to find that some uber mining clan had beat you to it and completely saturated the market with the exact same ore you have in your cargo hold. Leaving you once again credit-less, still out of ammo and forced to store or jetison the now useless ore.

I just hope I get let in to beta, I really hope to be proven wrong.

the trailer did not impress me, it did not impress me AT ALL.

It realy looks like a neocron ripoff, I'm not intrested in what things they changed and what they did not, every mmorpg has its problems, and so far neocron has had 'less problems' and 'more stuff to keep you from getting bored' than other non turn-based 'mmorpgs.

I'll stick to neocron thank you :x
