all external HD's are 2.0 nowadays.. but loads of ppl just have USB 1.1 on their comps..

question.. is it possible to connect a 2.0 external HD to a 1.1 comp ? like my disk on a pc of a friend when they need something..

Yes my 95GB external HD is USB2.0 I only have USB1.1 all that happens is windows pops up this silly little message saying its not going as fast as it could be...

Maybe you didn't know, but erm, there is no such thing as USB 2.0
Its something the press started calling that and it couldn't be swept away thus it has been adopted by many fabrics.

the "new" USB you are refering to is USB v1.1 in HiSpeed mode.
So yes theoratically you can connect any USB "2.0" system to a USB 1.1 port. Altho it is possible some hardware vendors made there drivers check if hispeed is enabled or not, making it impossible to use it withoud some driver hacking ( or using linux ) or just to display a message.

Wasn't it more common to use the label 'USB A' ?

All I know is everytime I plug that fat HD into my computer I get a USB 2.0 error. If they decided to drop it. I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah, I'm sure you can hook up most "USB 2.0 / High-Speed USB" external hard drives to your system to an older USB 1.1 port and use it, but it will be verrrryyy slowwww. -lol- Here's the theoretical maximum throughput on USB 1.1, the High-Speed version of USB 1.1 and the IDE interface used for hard disks in computer:

USB 1.1: 12 Mbps (1.5MBps)
High- Speed: 480Mbps (60MBps)
Internal IDE: 1064Mbps (133MBps)

If it was anything other than a hard disk, I'd say use the USB 1.1 ports. Since you are using a mass storage device, spend $20-30 for a High-Speed USB card and get that speed boost. Otherwise, transferring a few files can become a really tedious chore.

Well yes, kir has a point there, filling my 30GB IPod trough FireWire takes long enough, and right now FireWire is faster than Highspeed USB ( ok not in theory but it is right now believe me )

ok gonna buy an 4x USB 2.0 ( highspeed whatever u wanna call it ;x ) card to then.. lol 8 USB ports in my pc is that sick ?

and a 120 GB external HD.. hmm i know some movies like MIB II and XxX are on a comp @ work hrhr

if its movies you want, come pay me a visit with that 120GB of yours, I think its just big enough to hold all the movies I got here should leave you with around 10 to 20 GB left *grins*

not only movies.. got a few .iso ( of games )etc files that i use to load as virtual cd's.. like MOH and C&C generals.. but i'm not playing ALL of those at one time lol so i wanna put the ones i don't have installed on that disk.. aswell as the few movies i got.. and loads of small programs that are littering my disks.. and service pack updates.. always handy when installing windows @ a uncle who just have idsn and they NEED sp2 for 2k to install some drivers
