Overall : nVidia, but only because there Linux support is better than ATI's.

For home theater (tv-out and such) Definatly matrox... extreem quality

For best performance at lowest cost... ATI

The FX 5600 is around the same if not slightly lower performance wise than the GeForce 4 Ti 4600 if i remember correct, although it does support all of the DX9 shaders that will (supposedley) be used in DoY whereas the GF4 only goes as far as DirectX 8.0 with its PS1.3 (8.1 requires PS1.4)

It should be OK with D3 & HL2 but ur gonna want a lot of the stuff turned down/off i think.

Which manufacturer do i prefer?

Currently im running an ATi 9800Pro at XT speeds which i prefer ofer the nVidia cards of the same generation simply because from what i have seen its a fair bit faster than NV's equivalent when Pixelshaders & anti-aliasing are in use.

As for the new NV 6800's & ATi X800's, i intend to skip this generation & get something later on.

Personally, I'm for NV-based cards..

Mainly due to, as Husk already mentioned, the Linux support is far superior then ATIs. Shame, that a company like ATI can't get their shit together and realize that Linux is a hot ticket right now. *Shrug*

As for a video cards in general, I'm going to say they all suck. This "kicking each other in the balls" game they are play down right sucks. I say a card that supports all OSes, all GFX APIs with decent frame rates will be teh win.

I miss 3Dfx at times. ;)

Furthermore, if ya must know.. I'm using a NV 5700 (256meg) card.
