I only ever hung out with a tiny bunch of people in WoW, other 95% of the population was there to lag my client in Ironforge and be complete twits. So no, smaller communities are not necesarily bad.

Aha. Ahaha. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Ha.
Okay, let's review then, shall we?
Guild Wars
Not even an MMORPG so genre wise it should be disqualified instantly, as this is in fact a CORPG. Cooperative Online Roleplaying Game. Anyway. The gameplay is good, fun bashy bashy action. Doesn't really require much skill though, just the necesary levels to get through the content and a good combination of skills. Very pretty game if that scores highly on your tab. The unfortunate thing is that there is zero RP, and there is no community worth speaking off. Basically Guildwars is a pretty version of Diablo II where the battle.net chatrooms have been replaced with common town areas (which are spread across about 10 instances in most cases anyway).
I've played GW and the only interaction I've had with other people were friends who I told to come and join me, not people inside the actual game. This is purely a hack-and-slasher game, not an MMO at all.
World of Warcraft
(careful now, this is a big one...)
Okay, first off, graphics. Really pretty. Really really pretty, if you can get over the fact that armor is largely bodypainted onto your character. So that's good. Too bad unless you have a killer computer big fights lag you to death (literally, I'll be dead once I stop lagging and never see what hit me), not to mention flightpaths and auction houses. So nice graphics, but they're also laggy laggy laggy.
Gameplay. ... BWAHA. Hate to say it, but even for twitchy classes like a rogue WoW's gameplay extends no further than pulling a mob, toggling autohit, and applying seasoning with skills as desired until combat is at the right taste. Then rinse and repeat ad naseum. Nobody bothers with green con mobs since they give too little experience, so you're always stuck on yellows. Oh and did I mention that for less twitchy classes at top levels combat consists of hitting the autohit button, then every 30 seconds check up on progress until 1-2 minutes later the mob is dead? Anyway. Yellows. How heroic do I ever feel when I see 3 mobs that should yield reasonable experience, normal thuggish mobs... and I can't take them all at once. See in games like say, City of Heroes, I can jump into the fray of 10 mobs and kick their asses. In world of Warcraft I run from three mobs screaming like a little girl (I am a little girl, but that's besides the point), basically WoW's gameplay is flat, boring, unengaging, immersion breaking, and generally unheroic feeling.
Beyond this everything is kill kill kill, grind grind grind. Ever hear a tailor say "Hmm, I'm out of cloth, let me go kill some gnolls!" or a world where all miners were level 60 heroes of the realm because the civilized countries aren't smart enough to make mines where they won't get infested by monster? Everything is a grind, even PVP. Sure you fight other people, but you don't accomplish a darn thing, ever. PVP outside battlegrounds is the most inane clusterfuck I've ever seen, and inside people are just grinding honor points for that honor set of armor and that cool Grand Marshal title.
Community! The community in WoW is the absolute dregs of society. Really. If you ever want to see the most intolerant lot on average on the internet, go see WoW communities, especially the roleplay ones. Oh sure some people are nice but the pure bile spewing, festering hatred types, or homophobic people who scream "PLAYING A GIRL IF YOU'RE A GUY MEANS YOU'RE A PIMPLY FACED HORNY CONFUSED TEENAGER!" is overwhelming. There is no semblance of intelligence in these communities on the mean level, and really, that's most of why I left the game to begin with. I was basically tired of being harassed by teenybopper leet doods.
I can't even remember how often my guild members (part of the few good people) were up in arms about the community at large being assholes. Wait, I can actually, every week, hell every other day it was on again. It never even bloody stopped.
Moving on. Setting and cannon. Blizzard completely departed from their "shades of grey" model, and basically made the horde evil and the alliance good. The horde has all kinds of anti alliance (unprompted) quests, while the alliance does nothing but fend off horde incursions. Then there's the forsaken, the angsty "woe are us, we're not evil but misunderstood", who clearly torture members of the horde as well as the alliance in their city, but apparantly the hordies don't notice this. Even more so the horde is completely oblivious to the fact that the forsaken are concocting plagues to target ALL living beings, not just the alliance. Not to mention that the tauren are nature abiding nature loving people and wouldn't for a second tolerate undead abominations. Trolls? They ought to smash their skulls on the principle of "bewaaaare the VOODOO". Unless something dead walking around, torturing things and talking isn't bad Voodoo. The orcs should be smarter than allowing Burning Legion spawn into their ranks, they should be more bloody wary after what happened to Grom.
Alliance side, it's JUST as fun. Thrall never removed splintertree post (makes no sense either as per battle of mount Hijal) and the elves are basically trying desperately to still defend their territory against the horde. Meanwhile the undead are killing off druids and turning them into malicious weapons. Standral Faghelm the most hated figure is somehow the leader of ALL ELVES now and has even DECLARED WAR on the horde, again, kinda weird. He doesn't even have the backing of the cenarion circle and how does an archdruid declare war on a faction that also has related druids anyway? Speaking about druids, I find it very amusing that tauren and elf druids should be friendly, yet kill eachother merrily all the same. Oh and the tauren? They never bloody well should've joined the horde as it is today, the forsaken and the trolls should be an affront to their delicate bloody sensibilities and the elves should seem a lot more appealing. Especially since the two have shared the continent in relative peace for ages.
All this to create two equal factions, and to sate Blizzard's "evil race" wankery, so people can PVP without reason getting in their way of wether or not that level 60 elf druid should kill that level 10 tauren druid.
Oh and as for the level of roleplay, I can assure you that 90% of people in WoW don't bloody well know what roleplay even means. Don't believe me, go to Freakshire, errrr, Goldshire, and go see everyone dying in fireplaces and dancing naked on tables ... because they can.
So basically, we've discovered about WoW:
- The setting and cannon are fucked beyond recognition mostly for PVP and "leet evil race" wankery
- The community are the dregs of society and unpalpable to extremes
- Only few people actually know what RP is and not suck at it
- The gameplay is flat, boring, unheroic, immersion breaking and unpalpable
- Every mechanical thing to do in the game is based on going out and killing something (very smart of Blizz to do btw, because that means they can use one system (combat/spawns/drops) for all their needs)
We've discovered about GW that it's a mostly small party multiplayer game, or singleplayer game, with an aspect of MMO-ness tossed in and some PVP, but it hardly qualifies as an actual MMO, and has no community or anything.
So why again was I supposed to play these two games? (although I admit GW is fun if I'm in the mood for mindless killing)
I can't help but wonder what good it does you to tell other people who are interested in game X, that it is in fact shite and that they should play game Y instead. It's not even a relevant comment.
