Tottaly OT RL question

Alright I was talking to ! and BunkerBoy in TH today, I don't know how we got on the topic, but we were talking about GEDs. Ok well Im 15, near 16 irl. I was wondering the ups/downs and just any good info you can give me on a GED compared to graduating Highschool. Anything is good, real life situations, things you did, links, etc etc. BUT PLEASE, no flames like this - "Stupid kid just graduate highschool and stop trying to get out the easy way" blah blah blah. If your gonna do that....at least give me some info why, so I wont feel as bad Oh and btw Im in the US, cause Im sure its diffrent other places. Any info is great, thanks!

Ok..
Imagine yourself in a big business and you were the guy doing the hiring.
you have 2 apps.
One guys app says hes a high school grad, the other says GED.
Who would you hire? The slacker easy out guy or the hard working guy?

Get the diploma, you'll thank yourself later in life.

Heh, yah I have a friend or two with a GED instead of a diploma and they will tell you the GED is an option for people who made the wrong choice in high school. :wink:

your shool systems are way different than the dutch ones so I couldn't realy say, its also hard to say at solicitating ( that an english word? hmm... anyhow), cause when times are rough and money is scarce they rather hire a lower educated guy that can do the job(lower loan) than a higher educated guy(higher loan), but when the market gets back on its feet again ( which it always does ) the higher educated guy is more intresting, unless the lower educated guy has more real work experience, especialy when his work experience is of the same matter.

If it where up to me, I'd say choose the highest path possible, try to get most out of a diploma, in the netherlands a diploma is more wanted than people who have gotten there by means of a course, not counting any work experience one could have...

oh and erm... I've written this not know what a GED is... well thinking Thonkus his comment is probably a joke

Well I would say do what ever you feel you want to do,
In my experience having good contacts,
and good references from former jobs are better than a diploma.

But it depends on what kind of job you want.

Hm yeah...I probably should of put what I wanted to do , but thank you for all the input! Oh and I would LIKE to open up my own place, a computer shop, with like parts, assembly, fixing em, all that good stuff. Like the kind of computer shop you see in the middle of nowhere with all the parts all over the walls and stuff....you could say a "family owned" shop...only w/ just me

I'm actualy working at a shop like that right now, trust me, after two years you'll be screaming for a different job, unless offcourse you get succesfull and leave the boring stuff to others
But well, won't be long till I end my "career" there and I'll be back getting educated for something else, perhaps webdesign, not sure yet

lol^, Im saying I want to own my own shop, although yes, I can see the boringness of it lol. Webdesign and all that intrested me as well...BUT from what Ive heard all that computer stuff is taken and its hard to get a job dealing with them....but since you dont live in the US than it might be diffrent.

nah its quite the same, but it depends on what you do with computers, if your a network designer your job is to make yourselve expendable... not to good for income - the web designer marked is quite satisfied (?) I mean there are to many already - not sure what market is still fairly safe, but if I where to gues I'd say factory electronics, PLC's and the like should still offer enough possible jobs. Question is if you like those jobs

From experience dude, stay in school, i fucked around loads in school, missing days / weeks etc, itts way not worth it, now im 20 this year an having to re take my GCSEs to get into uni, an im thinkin shit im gona be 23- 24 bt the time im finished with my Uni course, im having to take a night class soon to get my English grades, where if id stayed in school, i woulda been on that uni course that i wanted last year, its totaly not worth it, an when u get to be 20 or so ul think "i wish id stayed" i know i do, hell its like only a few yrs man just stick around an get somethin outa it, its way better than havin to go back an do it all again.

Aye, spose your right. Ill stick with it, now....I just got to figure out which College I want to go to or which would be best suited for me opening up a buisness...and maybe have web design as a backup...if thats possible.

Oh and btw...my GUESS is that Ill have a 2.4-3 GPA when I leave...would that have a major impact on a college suited for what I want to do?

Being younger will always give you an advantage. What jobs want is college and job experience. The younger you are, the more willing companies are to hire you in hopes of keeping you for a longer time. Yes a GED with nothing complimenting will get you no where. However, if you have a degree than they may not even notice that you took your GED. What use is a better job and more money when you're too old to enjoy it. If you truly follow through with college than there is no problem whatsoever. GED then a 2 year school, transfer to a university. Take your SAT's in college and you will definitely score higher than in high school. Unless you want to go to some stuffy fancy school, then most universities will accept any decent college transfer.

Prestige will get you favors. Drive will get you anywhere.
