New PC Project

Postby Morpheous » Thu Oct 27, 2005 3:31 pm

Hey all,

I've decided I need a second, powerful PC- partly for gaming, but mainly because I need to have something I can use to do Network Rendering on (Bryce Lightning, Vegas Network, Premier/After Effects network) alongside my current PC.

So, here's what i'm looking at so far:

P4 640 Skt775 3.2Ghz HT (800mhz FSB, 2MB cache)
BFG GeForce 7800GT OC (Pre-overclocked) PCI-E 256MB
Corsair TwinXMS 1024MB PRO (2x512MB sticks)
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 SATA 120GB
ASUS mainboard of some description...

How's that sound for a base system? Still deciding on a mainboard- the ABIT FATAL1TY boards any good?

Oh, and anyone want to put any input on cooling methods? I'm going with a Lian-Li V1500 case, which is great thermally, but anyone who has heard my PC or heard me on Vent/TS knows how loud my current one is :)

That sounds a little like my new box that is about to be built, except mine is AMD based. Mine will serve as a games box and as a dev box - A lot of processing power goes into bringing you this site!

Asustek A8N-E S939 nForce4 Ultra ATX
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Socket 939 512KB
Gigabyte GF 7800GT 256MB PCI-E
Corsair Memory 2x1GB CAS2
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus10 300Gb S150 (The 250gig was out of stock)
HP 635i DVD Writer

If you are rendering, I would recommend getting more memory (2gigs) and hard disk space. (200+)

Cooling, well no doubt when I build my system I will have some cooling issues, while at the same time, trying to keep the damm thing quiet.

Like I pm'd you brams on the neocron website, get the zalman HSF for your processor, its cooled mine massively, and also decreased the temp when overclocked!

Also tratos the BFG 7800GT is a nice card, its what ive been running for the last couple of weeks! Id definatly recommend it, it runs nice and cool (around 36 degrees) and will run all the latest games with decent resolution and AA and AAF!

If ya want any more info let me know!

I'm not going for the overclocking...(Yet) How silent is that Zalman HSF?

BTW parts arrived for my PC somewhere... Just checked the online tracking, and the boxes was delivered to someone else, but I don't recall seeing a card, but thats probably because I wasn't looking at the letterbox or floor on the way out.

the Zalman fan is around 18 dB lol, also it keeps my oc'd cpu below 40 degrees, thats as good as some of the cheaper water cooling set ups! I used to use the Akasa Evo HSF as it was recommended in Custom PC, but now ive bought the Zalman i wouldnt go back, cooler and quieter it rocks!

I am happy to report that my 2+ year old PC is still up to the job. As a point of principle I always go with AMD chips. Not saying that one big multinational is nicer and fluffier than the other, but I would rather support a company that doesn't indulge in monopolistic and anti-competitive practices, despite having the lion's share of the market. Oh and if you're British, then it's your duty to support the underdog! (not British)

I would also like to chip in a good word for Zalman, if you hate noise, those guys at quietpc.co.uk will be your good friends.

I am due to get my dad's box this summer- however it is pretty bollocks.

AMD athlon 1700+ 1.7ghz
geforce 2 mx400
640mb O_o
40gb

Hmmm. So, for starters, I'll spash out on more hdd space. Then in a year or so i'll slim it right down and sell it, using the profits to buy the parts for a beast of a machine. Computers sell for loads in France, especially if they come pre-installed with the French version of Windows xp, office, etc. Should get about 800 euros, the suckers!!
