Might I suggest using remote avatars instead? saves you bandwith, changing of settings and therefore also avoids a security risk in your or the webserver.
you van find it under general admin -> configuration -> Enable remote avatars

Ok I've fixed the directory permission so the webserver can save avators - if it fails let me know. I'm not too bothered about the bandwidth, we have plenty!
Or if you like you can remote link the avator.....that reminds me I must design my avator..... Long overdue.
